Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has accepted the Vatican's challenge to a cricket match through his representative in Rome, Archbishop David Moxon. Plans are being made for the match to be held at Lord's in September 2014 when the Vatican’s St. Peter's Cricket Club, made up of priests and seminarians from Catholic colleges and seminaries in Rome, can meet a similar Church of England team.
“This will introduce a conversation piece all over the world whenever Catholics and Anglicans get together," Archbishop Moxon told a press conference at the Anglican Centre in Rome just before Christmas. "I think it can only do good and increase the bonds of affection we have for each other."
The idea for a Catholic cricket club came from John McCarthy, Australia's ambassador to the Vatican.
