Pilgrimage to explore St Paul’s heritage in Rome

The Anglican Centre in Rome is delighted to be organising an upcoming ecumenical pilgrimage – St Paul in Rome – from Tuesday, 26th May, to Friday, 29th May 2026, which will form part of its academic programme for this year.  Each day will consider a different aspect of the apostle’s ministry in the city, and the meanings we can draw from this time for how we follow Jesus today:

  • Tuesday, 26th May – A Jew in Rome
  • Wednesday, 27th May – An apostle to the Early Church in Rome
  • Thursday, 28th May – His life-giving death in Christ
  • Friday, 29th May – Going forth

This pilgrimage will offer a unique opportunity to walk in the footsteps of St Paul, visiting significant Christian and Jewish sites, and hearing from lecturers, religious leaders and guides who will share their insights into his life in Rome, his writings, and the life and worship of the earliest Christian communities in the city.

Within the schedule of the four days, pilgrims will have the opportunity to visit:

  • the Chiesa di Santa Maria in Via Lata and Chiesa di San Paolo all Regola (both of which are honoured as places of Paul’s residence and house arrest)
  • the Jewish Quarter – including the Great Synagogue and the Jewish Museum of Rome
  • the Abbazia delle Tre Fontane (the site of Paul’s martyrdom)
  • the Basilica Papale di San Paolo Fuori le Mura (the place of Paul’s burial)
  • the Basilica di San Marco (dedicated to St Mark the Evangelist)
  • the Capitoline Museums and the Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli

Talks on the Letter to the Romans, Paul’s messages for Jewish and Gentile Christians in Rome, and Jews and Christians then and now, will take place in the Anglican Centre.  Pilgrims are invited to attend Evening Prayer at St Paul’s Within the Walls Episcopal Church on Via Napoli.

The pilgrimage will be led by Fr Scott Brodeur SJ, who teaches Biblical Theology at the Gregorian University in Rome and has extensive experience in leading study pilgrimages on St Paul around the world.  He will be accompanied by clergy from the Anglican Centre in Rome.
